The special friends website provides the opportunity for social interactivity among people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties. Not only that but it also recognises the need for the parents and carers to keep in touch and share information. This is especially beneficial for those who have babies and infants with a learning disability who, through Special Friends, now have the opportunity to meet people having similar experiences and perhaps be united with support groups and people in their own area.

Facilities include Smiley Talk which is a method of communicating for people who have difficulty using a keyboard, chatrooms, forums and the opportunity to make new friends from around the world.

Special Friends take the safety and security of their members very seriously, while at the same time allowing the freedom that people with Learning/Intellectual Disabilities deserve. They have implemented a number of methods to try to achieve these goals including 24 hour moderation, report abuse buttons, the ability for parents and carers to lock down chatrooms, 1-2-1 chats and messages and keyword filters, to spot and deal with profanity and abuse in it's tracks.
Over and above the social aspect of the site, there is a shop, tonnes of information, games and a list of "heroes" with truly inspirational stories.
